Mubarak-Gaddafi Contact

Contact On Sunday, President Hosni Mubarak received a message from his Libyan counterpart Muammar Gaddafi regarding bilateral relations and regional issues. After delivering the message, Libyan Arab Unity Minister Gomaa Al-Fazzani told reporters that Tripoli had praised the OAU's decision to ignore the UN-sponsored flight ban over Libya.

"This decision shows that Africa feels the extent of the injustice inflicted upon the Libyan people," Al-Fazzani said. "Unfortunately the resolution was met with contempt from the Americans." The Libyan minister described as an "insult to the OAU" Washington's allusion to the OAU resolution as "shortsighted and irresponsible." The OAU decision to ignore the flight ban takes effect in December.

Egypt has been spearheading efforts to lift UN sanctions imposed on Libya in 1992 because of Tripoli's refusal to hand over to Britain or the United States two suspects wanted in connection with the 1988 bombing of a passenger plane over Lockerbie, Scotland.

For nearly a month now, the Libyan president has been expected in Cairo, but a visit is not likely to come soon. Al-Fazzani said Gaddafi will travel to Egypt "whenever it is appropriate."
