Sheikh El-ShaarawiThe most important element in my portrait of the late Sheikh El-Shaarawi is his ear, which provides a counterpoint to his powerful beard and the decisive lines of his turban. The ear is almost funnel-shaped, as if strained in anticipation as its owner listens carefully to one of his recorded sermons. In contrast, his eyes are almost linear, compressed between the twin pressures of beard and turban. |
