TWO HUNDRED years ago today,
the French Expedition disembarked at Dekheila. The occupation lasted
three years, but the debates continue: did the Expedition "usher in
modernity", shaking Egypt from centuries of cultural stagnation and
technological backwardness? Was Bonaparte's invasion the first of
the modern imperialist ventures? Or was it merely a brief moment in
the otherwise continuous flow of history? To side-step the controversy
raised by the suggestion that Egypt "celebrate its own occupation",
France and Egypt are commemorating 200 years of Franco-Egyptian cooperation
and shared horizons. --see Features--
