L'Expedition TWO HUNDRED years ago today, the French Expedition disembarked at Dekheila. The occupation lasted three years, but the debates continue: did the Expedition "usher in modernity", shaking Egypt from centuries of cultural stagnation and technological backwardness? Was Bonaparte's invasion the first of the modern imperialist ventures? Or was it merely a brief moment in the otherwise continuous flow of history? To side-step the controversy raised by the suggestion that Egypt "celebrate its own occupation", France and Egypt are commemorating 200 years of Franco-Egyptian cooperation and shared horizons. --see Features--
