Summit step

FOREIGN Minister Amr Moussa arrived in Morocco yesterday to attend a two-day meeting of the Jerusalem Committee which will address Israel's decision to extend the limits of the municipality of Jerusalem.

The 17th session of the Jerusalem Committee will also deal with the deadlocked Middle East peace process, Israeli settlement policies and the US wait-and-see policy.

On arriving at Casablanca, Moussa told reporters the meeting could be a step towards convening an Arab summit. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat also joined the meeting.

PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak is scheduled to meet today in Alexandria with a delegation from the Arab Journalists' Federation (AJF) headed by Al-Ahram Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Ibrahim Nafie.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Nafie said that the press and government should work together to ensure development and prosperity, adding that the only "regulator" of press freedom should be the "journalist's conscience".

"Governments should facilitate easy access to information, and journalists must be committed to a code of ethics," Nafie noted.

At yesterday's meeting, a number of issues were discussed including the creation of a fund to support the families of Arab journalists killed in the line of duty; a pan-Arab press law; the cancellation of visa requirements for Arab journalists visiting Arab countries, and the lifting of censorship in the Arab press.

Political issues on the AJF's agenda include the Middle East peace process and crippling economic sanctions imposed on Iraq and Libya.
