Bring in the new

By Rifaat El-Said *

El-Said A poignant phrase by Keynes seems relevant to the struggle for change within the Tagammu Party. To paraphrase: accepting the new is easy, getting rid of the old is much more difficult.

We all agreed years ago on the need for a new programme and organisational tools adapted to changing times. When we began to speak of specific formulae and tools, however, the real differences surfaced. There were accusations that some were trying to peddle old goods in new packaging, and that others seemed willing to jettison the principles upon which the Tagammu, as a left-wing, progressive socialist party, was established.

A serious dialogue began. It was often heated, but always respected each individual's right to free expression. For three years, many controversial issues were debated, but the dialogue remained "liberal". Differences of opinion included not only the new programme and political positions, but the party's organisational aspects too.

Discussions revealed the need to expand the leadership and open it up to young members, and to include more women on the central committee.

Ultimately, the majority made the decisions in a truly democratic way. Maybe this democracy was a bit annoying at times. It imposed tiresome discussions and debates. Yet members were able to disagree strongly and still remain united. Democratic practice will enable the Tagammu to act as a role model, not only in formal political life, but throughout society.
