New airportsCONTRACTS to construct two build-own-operate (BOT) airports in Ras Sidr and Al-Alamein were signed this week. The LE2.8 billion deals will involve the construction of runways, airport infrastructure, arrival and departure terminals and free-trade zones.Transport, Communications and Civil Aviation Minister Soliman Metwalli said that the agreements were part of the government's policy to encourage private sector investments in infrastructure projects. The construction and operation of Al-Alamein airport, on the northwest coast, will be carried out by Kato Investment Company, which also plans to set up free-trade zones and work on a series of future touristic projects. Delta Corporations will build the airport in Ras Sidr. Preliminary work, estimated at LE150 million, will focus on the airport's construction and several hotels and other touristic projects designed to promote Ras Sidr as a new tourist destination in southern Sinai. Both companies will build and operate the facilities for a 50-year period, after which they will be transferred to the government. |
