A mini retrospective of the documentary films of Attiyat El-Abnoudi is to be screened at the French Cultural Centre from 13-17 September. The programme includes:
14 September Sandwich, 13 min: on Abnou, an Upper Egyptian village at which the tourist trains never stop en route to Luxor. Iqaa' Al-Haya (The Rhythm of Life), 63 min: the cycle of daily life -- work, leisure, birth, death -- in 14 Upper Egyptian villages between 1987-88. 15 September Hossan Al-Tin (Mud Horse), 12 min: filmed over a two year period and recipient of numerous international awards, this was Abnoudi's first documentary. It is about a brick factory in a village in the Kafr Al-Sheikh governorate where men, women, children and horses work side by side. Oghniyet Touha Al-Hazina (Touha's Sad Song), 12 min: in the alleyways of the traditional and working class districts of Cairo, a mini travelling circus performs to earn a living. Souq Al-Kanto (Flea Market), 12 min: in English and filmed in Covent Garden, London, the film takes us on a stroll through the famous market. Al-Ahlam Al-Mumkina (Possible Dreams), 33 min: Um Said, an elderly fellaha who lived in the Suez governorate during the 1956 war, left it and returned after the 1973 war, tells us about her life and the hopes she has for her children and grandchildren. 16 September Illi Baa' w'ill'Eshtara (Those who Sold and those who Bought), 33 min: the Suez Canal area was invaded, fought for and won back. But what has become of the area today? Behar Al-'Atash (Seas of Thirst), 47 min: prize-winning documentary about the Borg Al-Borollos fishing village whose inhabitants struggle daily to obtain enough potable water to survive. 17 September Hadith Al-Ghurfa Raqam 8 (Words Spoken in Room Number 8), 28 min: the last interview before the death of Egyptian poet Amal Donqol. Ahlam Al-Banat (Girls' Dreams), 24 min: on early marriage, leaving school, and who makes the important decisions. Nissa' Massoulat (Responsible Women), 28 min: on Egyptian women who are the main breadwinners of roughly 20 per cent of Egyptian families.
