THESE HALLOWED HALLS, quiet for most of the summer, are ringing once again with the voices of thousands of students. Professors have barely had a moment's respite, having spent the past months marking a deluge of end-of-term papers. Now they are gearing up for the new academic year. As for the students, they have the usual problems on their minds: what courses to take, what books to read, what research topics to choose... and where to sit.
