Nasser

Gamal Abdel-Nasser

It was 28 September, 28 years ago, at a quarter past six in the evening, that Nasser died. On that, the last day of his life, he was still attempting to mediate in the tragedy of Black September. Did the effort kill him? Whatever the case may be, September was surely all the darker for his death. I may draw him three times a year -- on his birthday, on 23 July, and on this, the anniversary of his sudden departure -- but he is in my heart all year round, his face like that of a merry Sphinx.
