New horizons

By Naguib Mahfouz

Mahfouz The best piece of news I heard lately was the government's reply to criticism of certain aspects of the colossal Toshka project, intended to create a new Nile Valley, where a better life, far from the pollution, economic difficulties and crowds of the capital, will be possible. I am patiently watching as Toshka comes to life: the creation of a new valley will open up new horizons, and give people new hope. But since its inception, legitimate questions as to the scheme's effectiveness have been raised. The government should have addressed these promptly, either by a decisive denial if the criticism was unfounded, or by approval and rapid action to redress problems if any existed.

I was pleased with the government's reply to the criticism, and its decision to assure us that the project is sound. I am personally most enthusiastic, and believe that Toshka will create a new world at the southernmost borders of our country, and transfer the surplus of population and activity away from the overcrowded, polluted capital.

While it may be argued that the project is basically an agricultural enterprise, everyone knows that industry and trade are built on the foundations laid by agriculture. The new valley will create thousands of new job opportunities for young people who are eager to build a better future, establish families and eventually create new societies.

I eagerly anticipate the president's forthcoming visit to Toshka, scheduled to take place after the feast. I am also anxious for the day when we will reap the fruits of this great project, for the good of the people.

Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
