UK businessmen pitch in

IN AN ATTEMPT to promote economic relations between Egypt and Britain, a high-level British trade and investment mission is scheduled to visit Cairo next week.

The delegation will be headed by Lord Denman, deputy chairman of the Committee for Middle East Trade (COMET). During the five-day visit, British businessmen are scheduled to meet with their Egyptian counterparts.

Egyptian Minister of Economy Youssef Boutros Ghali announced that the mission is evidence that Egypt's economic transformation "is finally being recognised beyond its borders".

Brian Wilson, minister at the British Department of Trade and Industry, stated that "Egypt currently offers excellent business opportunities and due to its strategic location as a major regional hub, it provides a unique entry to the markets of the Middle East and southern Africa."

The mission's aim is to provide delegates with the most favourable entry conditions into the Egyptian market, to introduce British companies to potential business partners, to provide delegates with access to senior Egyptian officials and to help British companies operating in Egypt to develop their businesses.

Egyptian Ambassador to Britain Adel El-Gazzar commented that "the rapidly expanding commercial relations between the two countries present splendid opportunities for companies on both sides to develop partnership projects."

Atef Ebeid, minister of public enterprise, said: "Britain, a leading exponent of the benefits of privatisation, is a welcome partner in helping us achieve our economic objectives."

Egypt has been identified by the British Department of Trade and Industry's Export Forum as one of 10 key world markets for British firms.

British exports to Egypt increased by 16 per cent in 1997 to reach £500 million, making the UK the second largest non-Arab trade partner for Egypt after the United States.
