Things have changed since those modest graduation ceremonies at the American University in Cairo in days gone by, and nothing smaller than the Cairo International Conference Centre is large enough to accommodate the attending public these days. This year, the presence of a very special guest was instrumental in making of the Winter Commencement 1999 an unforgettable event : Over and above awarding 325 Bachelor's and 71 Master's degrees, AUC conferred on Egypt's queen of the screen, the famous Faten Hamama, an honorary PhD in recognition of the artistic achievements which have kept almost two generations of fans constantly enthralled. I bet that this year's new crop of graduates feel extra special for having shared their moment of glory with the great star. Another honorary PhD recipient was Dr Laila El-Hamamsi for her contribution in establishing an Arab discipline of Anthropology, and for her important research conducted while director of AUC's social research centre.
