THE BETTER to prepare Egypt for the coming millennium, work continues around the clock on the huge desert reclamation project at Toshka in the south-west of the country. The project has been hailed as a "new valley" -- a second river of life for Egyptians, in addition to the existing Nile Valley. Costing approximately LE420 billion, Toshka is being funded mostly by private sector investment, both local and foreign. It will serve as a springboard for numerous other industrial, agricultural and residential projects.President Mubarak, who gave the go-ahead for the project on 9 January 1997, has since visited the site six times to ensure the initial momentum is maintained. He was there again on Monday for a five-hour tour, accompanied by a high-profile throng of government and public figures, as well as celebrities from all walks of life.
"This project is an opportunity for those who are looking for a better life," Mubarak told his entourage. "It is the project for the future". In this picture, Mubarak presses a button signalling the start of construction work on a huge fuel and power complex which will service the project.
