MOMENTUM is building up for Cairo's hosting of the year 2000 International Congress of Egyptologists. The organising committee for the conference has sent out the first announcements for the event, which will be held between 28 March and 3 April. It will cover achievements of the different disciplines of Egyptology over the last 200 years, and Zahi Hawass, chairman of the committee, expects it to be the largest gathering of Egyptologists ever.
"We expect some 1,500 participants," he said. "The large turnout is expected not only because Egypt is the obvious country to describe the state of Egyptology at the end of the millennium, but also because there are so many fascinating subjects to be reviewed."
A great deal has been learned in the fields of history, archaeology, language, literature, religion and art. This year there will be papers, too, on such subjects as the state of Egyptian monuments, restoration, conservation, site management and protection. Special focus will be given to the Delta, which has been much neglected in the past.
The Cairo International Conference Centre will be the venue of the gathering. Emeco Travel Agency will provide a hospitality desk at each main hotel with shuttle transportation, entertainment, details of post-congress tours and other relevant information.
"Debates among participants will be organised," said Hawass, "and a grand celebration will be held in front of the Pyramids."
Acceptance is needed before 1 April and speakers' abstracts by mid-September so that the final arrangements can be made at an early date.
