Pack of Cards

By Madame Sosostris

Being a firm believer in the adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder, I have no doubt that you will be overjoyed to see me reappear in my upgraded disguise, firmly ensconsed on the back page of our dear paper. As you will also notice, the profile now has its very own penultimate page. We felt that the profiles, which were being slowly gnawed at by all these wonderful advertisements in the past few weeks, really needed more space, while yours truly has been promoted to spinning the (longer) yarn above, below and around the incitements to consumption. And where better to tell you about the multitude of exciting and entertaining cultural events in the most exhaustive detail?

Alexander 2000

To give you a taste of things to come, let me tell you that I have just been to the exhibition titled Alexander 2000 at the Art Palace of the Opera House. Well, once our Minister of Foreign Affairs Amr Moussa and our Culture Minister Farouk Hosni had officially opened the venue, I took my time admiring the 404 paintings (including 16 portraits of the subject at different ages) and 19 statues, all showing the many aspects of Alexander the Great. It is really imperative that you take yourselves there in a hurry if you are hankering for an artistic treat. And if by any chance you were thinking that the artist, the renowned Greek painter Farlamess, has called his exhibition Alexander 2000 in reference to the beginning of the second millenium, hear this: he told me that it is because he intends to complete the collection, which should include 2,000 pieces by the year 2000. As I was saying, many things to come.

Omar

And in this connection, let us take a good look at the brand new generations and specially at young Omar, who was born just a few months ago to our very own Tarek Atia and to his gorgeous wife Inas Hamam who is currently doing the motherly thing at home, until Omar is old enough to take off on his own and start kindergarten sending her back to her post at AUC. Well dears, I am sure you agree that congratulations are in order to which I wish to add my own bit of wisdom: If you think that Omar is giving you sleepless nights now, just wait until he grows up.
