AFTER A WHIRLWIND two-day stay in Cairo, Mrs Clinton and Chelsea left for Luxor on Tuesday, and spent the afternoon touring the Luxor Temple, where they were greeted by a throng of over 200 cheering tourists. Yesterday, they visited Tutankhamun's tomb and other sites in the burial grounds west of Luxor, paused at the Hatshepsut Temple, and met scholars to learn more about "the site where civilisation was born", as Ray Johnson, field director of the Chicago House Egyptology project, described the area.

The US First Lady, in her speech at the American University in Cairo, had made reference to the Pharaonic practice of filling tombs with supplies for the afterlife, and had suggested that values like religious tolerance were now essential items worth preserving.
