New green facility

A NEW Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (IEST) is to be established in 6th October City by Cairo University, in cooperation with the US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and the University of Illinois. The Egyptian government will contribute LE70 million to the project, in addition to $30 million which will be donated in foreign grants.

The institute, described by President of Cairo University Farouk Ismail as a "state-of-the-art facility", will undertake specialised environmental research, offer graduate studies and create a link between scientists and the government so as to devise practicable methods for applying environmental protection.

IEST has already started its work in nucleus form through the Environmental Hazard Mitigation Centre (EHMC) established at Cairo University in 1994 in cooperation with Washington University.

"Through the institute's different specialised facilities we will, for instance, be able to measure the amount of pollution which should be removed in order to improve Cairo's air, as well as assess the condition of Egypt's water resources and develop environmentally acceptable methods for the treatment of hazardous waste," said Mohamed Sultan, Egyptian principal investigator for IEST.

The institute will be staffed by scientists from Cairo University and their counterparts from ANL and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

In addition to the agreement concluded with ANL, an agreement will be signed with the University of California for cooperation in the field of environmental issues.
