Around the galleries
CHILDREN, mainly at play, form the subject of the 28 paintings by Samir Fouad on exhibit at Al-Hanager Gallery. Swings, paper birds, wooden rocking horses, moulid dolls made of sugar -- but nothing too saccharine. Grey dominates and where there is light, shadows fall, serving effectively to remind us of the anxiety and terror that haunt the nursery.
Extra Gallery hosts 30 recent paintings by Tad. Deftly and without pretensions, these humorously capture "snapshots" of Cairo's street life.
A selection of portraits by 32 Egyptian artists is on exhibit in the foyer of the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art. This is an impressive show, taking in its sweep such pioneering giants and contemporary artists of distinction as: Mahmoud Mukhtar, Mahmoud Said, Ahmed Sabri, Mohamed Hassan, Hussein Bicar, Sabri Ragheb, Gamal Kamel and George Bahgoury, to name but a few.
