WHILE on a short visit to Luxor this week, President Hosni Mubarak said he was "very satisfied" with the rising number of tourists visiting Egypt. He expressed hope that the tourism sector would continue to grow. "We want more tourists," he said.Mubarak inaugurated a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, on the west bank of the Nile, belonging to Amenhotep II, and another for both Tausert and Setnakht. The first dates back to around 1450BC, and the second to around 1300BC.
"We are a very safe country and we welcome any visitor. We tell them 'don't be afraid, you are in a very safe place'," Mubarak told reporters. He was speaking at the Hatshepsut Temple, where 58 tourists were killed by militants in November 1997. A large number of the victims were Japanese. "I have already said in Japan that Egypt is a very safe country, despite the attack which took place here two years ago," he added.
Mubarak recently concluded an Asian tour which included China, South Korea and Japan.
Promoting Egypt as an ideal tourist destination, Mubarak said that Egyptians "care about tourists and treat them in the best possible way".
