A royal visit

Princess Anne ON THE INVITATION of Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, Princess Anne arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for a three-day visit. The British ambassador to Cairo, Sir David Blatherwick, said the visit would promote cooperation between the two countries on all levels. The princess was received early on Wednesday morning by President Hosni Mubarak.

The visit, the princess' first to Egypt, will be teeming with activities, beginning with a meeting at the Regional Centre for the Salvation and Protection of Children, an affiliate of the International Fund for the Salvation and Protection of Children, a London-based organisation established in 1919 and headed by Princess Anne since 1970.

A visit to Upper Egypt is scheduled for today where the Princess will inspect a number of projects sponsored by the British government, including an adult illiteracy eradication facility, and will also tour the Pharaonic sites in Luxor.

She will then return to Cairo for more sightseeing at the Pyramids and in Old Cairo.

Princess Anne heads or sponsors 222 organisations.

Return vote

ISRAEL protested yesterday over a resolution from the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva backing Palestinian self-determination, in areas including parts of present-day Israel, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees. After failing to prevent a vote on the resolution, which was only opposed by the US, Israel expressed particular anger that the European Union supported the document, AFP reported.

The resolution, adopted on Tuesday, referred to two early UN resolutions, number 181 of 1947, embodying a plan for the partition of Palestine, and number 194. It called for Jerusalem to be a "separate body".

Israeli officials were also alarmed at the reference to UN Resolution 194 which allows for the return home of up to three million Palestinian refugees.
