Restoring old glory
PLANS are underway to restore the 19th century Cairo Opera Square to its former glory, Nevine El-Aref reports. To revive the image of the old Opera Square, the Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni recently proposed a rehabilitation project to the Cabinet. According to sources in the ministry, this project aims at upgrading the area surrounding the national theatre, and will comprise a building in the same architectural style as the former Royal Opera House which burned down in 1971.
A garden away from the national theatre, the new construction will replace the Mattatias block, which housed several small workshops, as well as the famous café on its ground level.
This plan is under study at the moment and work will begin as soon as it is given final approval.
Well may they weep
