US PRESIDENT Bill Clinton was briefed by NATO officials in Brussels yesterday on the results of NATO air assaults on Yugoslavia, as two American pilots, killed when their Apache helicopter crashed during a training mission in Albania, became the first US losses in the six-week air-campaign, AP reported.Diplomatic activity to resolve the Kosovo crisis shifts to Bonn today as foreign ministers of the G8 nations meet to discuss proposals on stationing an international civilian and security presence in Kosovo.
Following a meeting between Russian special envoy Victor Chernomyrdin and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Tuesday night, diplomatic sources at the UN said that Belgrade had offered to accept a small lightly armed UN force mainly made up of non-NATO countries, but still wants to keep 11,000 Serb troops in Kosovo. The US and NATO insist on a full withdrawal of Serb troops.

Missile attack
ISRAELI fighter bombers on Tuesday night fired two missiles on a heavily-populated neighbourhood in the Lebanese city of Baalbek, wounding at least two civilians, AFP reported.The missiles were allegedly aimed at Hizbullah targets in retaliation for the killing of an Israeli soldier and the wounding of four others in a series of Hizbullah attacks in the Israeli-occupied border zone in southern Lebanon on Monday.

ELECTIONS for the post of Press Syndicate chairman and 12 council seats will be held on 27 June. The decision was taken Tuesday night by the Syndicate's council, which also decided that nominations would be put forward for a five-day period starting on 12 June.According to Law 100 of 1993, election of the chairman should take place every two years. The chairman can serve for a maximum two consecutive terms. Chairman Makram Mohamed Ahmed has said he has yet to decide whether he will run for a second term.
