On the occasion of 1 May, I decided to draw one of the workers who are digging the Al-Azhar tunnel. I took few liberties in making of him an ideal type: the strong jaw, straight nose and confident gaze characteristic of the social realism school did, after all, have their foundations in reality. This worker is all hard hat and soft heart.
