Around the galleries
RECENTLY, the newly-opened Gezira Art Centre hosted in two of its five galleries mixed media works and installations by Emad Abu Zeid and drawings by Sanaa Moussa. Abu Zeid's manuscript-like collages have an environmental twist. In one of them, on a tattered piece of cloth we read "Ana lam ulawith maa' Al-Nil" (I did not pollute the water of the Nile). Many of the works on display have a message-in-a-bottle air about them, a bottle that would float up in some historical future from a no longer Nile-blue Nile. Moussa's pencil and charcoal drawings are mostly of faces evoking other parts of the body. On the surface these seem clinically detached, but at a subliminal level they are charged with the energy of drives frustrated.
