New resort

A CONTRACT has been signed making the Fantasia tourist resort in Ras Sidr part of the Holiday Inn chain. Holiday Inn spokesman Shawqi Khayrallah said, "In 1992 we had seven hotels in the Middle East, and the coming five years will see the number jump to 60, with Egypt leading that extension." He added that Ras Sidr, on the Gulf of Suez, will follow the successful examples of Hurghada and Sharm Al-Sheikh. "It is not too far from Cairo, has good road connections and will have an international airport to guarantee a flow of tourists," he said. Tourist officials see agreements with international companies as a positive step in building Egypt's overseas marketing abilities.

French tourists

HAVASS Voyage, a major French travel agency, held its annual congress in Luxor. About 300 French tour operators attended to better acquaint themselves with Egyptian tourist facilities. Havass

Voyage offered the trip as an incentive to profitable tour operators. Coming only three months after the successful congress of the French Federation of Travel Agencies, also held in Luxor, it is not surprising that the French market has jumped from fourth to third place among the markets exporting tourism to Egypt. "The French market has achieved high results in the first three months of 1999 in comparison to the same period last year," said Mamdouh El-Beltagui, the minister of tourism.

Red Sea protection

A STRATEGY to preserve the Red Sea environment has been approved by the Ministry of Tourism. It was formulated in conjunction with the Ministry of Environmental Affairs, the Red Sea Governorate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and USAID. It aims to conserve the natural resources in the region without hindering tourist development.

Conference facilities

MANY Egyptian hotels now provide necessary facilities to hold international and regional conferences. This applies not only to venues in Cairo but also to those in Alexandria. This was proved at the Sheraton Montazah recently when the Euro Mediterranean group held a conference, attended by a large number of businessmen, investors and entrepreneurs. Topics discussed included how best to use the Euro network to develop their merchandise, expand their investments and fund new or existing projects.

Luxor plans

LUXOR'S infrastructure is undergoing major improvement. A number of new roads have been added to the city's map; street vendors will be allotted a market-place to sell their vegetables and fruits; a recycling factory is already operating; and about 1,500 trees have been planted all over the city.
