SUDDENLY SUMMER: Even the residents of Egypt's northern port city, usually a summer refuge for thousands fleeing the sweltering Cairene temperatures, were feeling the burn last week as the mercury shot up 10 degrees Celsius almost overnight. While evenings remained relatively cool, the days were reminiscent of the height of summer, with temperatures reaching the low 40s. Pedestrians caught in the blazing sun improvised a mobile spot of shade with the tools at hand: a newspaper, a handbag, or, as here, a basket. A front of warm air moving in from Saudi Arabia was responsible for the heat wave, which seems to have dispelled -- but now, summer really is here.
