SINAI: PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT, a competition sponsored by Mrs Suzanne Mubarak and which had Ahmed Nawar as the head of its jury, had as its aim the confirmation of the role an artist can play in engaging with national questions and issues. Over 180 artists from all over Egypt participated and 25 prizes -- five for each of the five branches included in the competition, ranging from LE15,000 for first prize to LE1,500 for fifth -- were awarded. Prize-winners include: Mohamed Abdel-Hafiz Makkawi, Mohamed Ezzeddin Naguib and Abdel-Sabour El-Fouli in painting; Abdel-Magid El-Fiqqi, Mohamed Abdallah and Mohamed El-Sayid El-Alawi in sculpture; Metwali Mohamed Ali and Mohamed Galal Abdel-Razeq in engraving; Taher Abdel-Azim Said and Nabil Hassan Rashed in drawing; and Maher Youssef El-Shazli and Ahmed Ahmed El-Maghrabi in photography. These are on exhibit in the gallery attached to the Al-Galaa Club.
