FOLLOWING visits to Assiut and Aswan earlier last month, President Hosni Mubarak toured Sohag, a third southern city, on Sunday to inaugurate a number of infrastructure and production projects, as well as various public services. Mubarak also addressed a public rally and received pledges of support for his nomination for a fourth presidential term at that city, located some 400 kilometres south of Cairo. The president opened a tumour-treatment institute, an information centre, a drinking water station, a dairy factory run by the armed forces, an industrial gas complex and another complex for the production of foodstuffs.

During his tour, Mubarak gave directives that greater opportunities should be given to medium and small-size projects and that an additional LE1 million be allocated "immediately" to the tumour institute. The president also ordered that the ownership of land on which industrial projects are constructed be passed on gratis to the entrepreneurs. Mubarak issued directives that the Cairo-Assiut highway be extended to Sohag, to give the latter's inhabitants easier access to Assiut airport.
After the tour, Mubarak addressed a public rally, reviewing the economic reform programme's progress, as well as various mega-national projects. He said that he was impressed by Sohag's education, infrastructure and industrial facilities.
In the course of the public rally, Sheikh Abdel-Rehim El-Semeen, from Al-Azhar Mosque, and Bishop Bakhoum of Sohag presented the president with a document, declaring the support of the people of Sohag for his nomination for a fourth term. Hundreds of citizens lined the city's streets, cheering Mubarak and carrying his pictures.
