Shopping spree
PLANS for the second round of the Tourism and Shopping Festival scheduled for 20 July-20 August are under way. It promises discounts on hotel accommodation and shopping items. "This year's festival will include Cairo, Giza, Alexandria and Marina on the Northern Coast. Hurghada and Luxor might contribute as well," Mamdouh El-Beltagui, the minister of tourism, said.

EgyptAir will offer discounts during the month-long festival. "There will be a 50 per cent discount on annual ticket prices and 25 per cent on monthly prices, also 20 per cent discount on domestic flights," El-Beltagui said.

New valley
New valley A LEADING Italian magazine, I Viaggi di Republica, has published a 10-page supplement called "Egypt-historical oasis". The magazine looks at the New Valley and its attractions and provides an overview of what Egypt has to offer, from ancient monuments to scenic wonders. The Italian publisher dealt with the New Valley and the oases of Dakhla and Kharga, pointing out government efforts to promote virgin areas not exposed to pollution. The magazine also published an interview with Mamdouh El-Beltagui in which he talked about foreign investments in Egypt and facilities being provided to investors.

Tripoli flights
BRITISH Airways will launch flights to Tripoli today. It is one of the first major carriers to re-introduce services to the Libyan capital since the United Nations lifted sanctions in April 1999. The new service will be the UK's first non-stop link with the city.

"Tripoli has great potential as an important business market and an emerging tourist destination, with remarkable archaeological sites," said Charles Gurassa, the airline's director of passenger and cargo business.

Pyramids opera
A GERMAN troupe will present an opera at the Son et Lumiere theatre on the Pyramid Plateau this month. The event is being organised by a German travel agency under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Tourism. Ways to best promote the event were discussed at a meeting between heads of the German choir, the German orchestra and Mamdouh El-Beltagui, minister of tourism. The government will invite a handful of mayors from Germany to attend the performance.

Oneworld carrier
LINEA Aerea Nacional de Chile (LanChile) has become the latest member of the Oneworld airline alliance. It is the eighth member of the global airline alliance and the third carrier to join since Oneworld was announced last September. Finnair and Iberia have also entered the alliance -- first formed by American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas Airways.

LanChile plans to start adding their services and benefits in the year 2000.

Australian trip
IN THE framework of promoting Egypt and its tourist attractions, Cairo Sheraton recently hosted a group representing Australian travel agencies. The group toured Egypt to get acquainted with its tourist facilities. Hopes are high that the many Australian tourists who travel to Europe each year will be encouraged to stop and take in Egypt on the way.

Alex meeting
A two-day conference was held recently in Alexandria in Montazah Sheraton hotel dealing with the strategic plans of upgrading education in universities and higher institutes in order to comply with the 21st century requirements.

Main topics discussed were the influence of local and regional labour markets changes on determing calibers of graduates.
