THE SUPREME Egyptian-Yemeni Committee began meetings on 16 June, under the co-chairmanship of Prime Ministers Kamal El-Ganzouri and Abdel-Karim Al-Iryani, aimed at giving a boost to bilateral relations. Al-Iryani also met President Hosni Mubarak to convey a message from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. During the committee meetings, which ended on Saturday, 16 agreements and protocols were signed covering various fields.
The agreements provide for the establishment of an Egyptian-Yemeni bank and programmes of cooperation in higher education, scientific research, youth and sports, health, culture, oil and gas, customs, industry, administrative development and electricity. There was also an agreement between the Egyptian and Yemeni ministries of Al-Awqaf [religious endowments] as well as a protocol establishing a joint technical committee by the ministries of justice of the two countries.
The Supreme Committee urged the establishment of Arab free trade zones as a step toward the creation of an Arab common market.
The two countries urged the Israeli government to honour its commitments under signed agreements. Egypt and Yemen also affirmed their condemnation and rejection of the Israeli policy of building settlements in occupied territories as well as attempts to Judaise Jerusalem.
The Supreme Committee expressed solidarity with the Iraqi people, who have been suffering for years under the yoke of UN sanctions, and urged the lifting of these sanctions as soon as possible, as part of a comprehensive solution that would guarantee the sovereignty and unity of Iraq.
