THE LARGEST crowd ever to attend a women's sporting event watched Brazil beat Mexico 7-1 in the 1999 Women's Soccer World Cup in East Rutherford in the US.
It was a festive atmosphere at Giants Stadium packed by 78,972 fans, which exceeded the best attendance figures for any sports event at the venue, including the men's World Cup matches in 1994. Only a visit by Pope John Paul II in 1995 attracted a larger crowd to the football stadium. (photo: AP)
