THE CRACKDOWN : Tens of thousands of Iranians, many clutching portraits of the late leader of Iran's Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, marched through Tehran yesterday in support of "the pillars of Islamic rule". This came a day after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave free rein to the Islamic youth militia, Basij, to crush the violent rioting which followed a week of pro-democracy student unrest. Hasan Rowhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran's top security body, pledged a new " sweeping clean-up" against elements "which have dirtied the atmosphere of the Iranian society" and warned that persons who took part in rioting in the past two days would be charged with "counter revolutionary" activities, a crime punishable by death in Iran. photos:AP
