Recently on display at the Main Gallery of the Faculty of Applied Arts are Hoda Sedqi's printed textiles under the title Tradition and Modernity. The exhibition is a retrospective of sorts tracing the technical development in Sedqi's work. A first group of works on display consists of vividly-coloured, computer-designed patterns based on rudimental geometrical shapes combined with motifs quarried from folkloric heritage. The second group of works presents a return to a formally more classic mode of representation, namely still lifes, with the granulated and undular appearance of Sedqi's surfaces resulting in an aspect closely resembling trompe l'oeil. As for the third group, it is based on popular motifs captured in rows of small rectangular spaces forming a linear trajectory across the material.
