In the city that never sleeps, nighttime is the only time for a breath of air, anywhere you can get it. Most public "gardens" -- little more than strips of grass on a median line -- have been replaced by expanses of concrete dotted here and there with heavy benches. One of the only places where families can still spread out a blanket and have a picnic by moonlight (to the melodious honking of late-night traffic, true) is "Airport Garden", in the middle of Salah Salem Street. Still, there's always the river: a crate of soft drinks, a tape recorder and a trusty boatman are the only really necessary ingredients for an evening of family fun.
