Mohamed Shaker's lighthouse
THIS week's highlight is not to be found inside a gallery but on the Alexandria-Matrouh highway. Mohamed Shaker, professor at Alexandria's Faculty of Arts, upon the suggestion of Alexandrian businessman Mohamed Tag, has constructed a replica of the Andalusian lighthouse of Seville, originally erected in the 16th century. At one time it was the most famous lighthouse in Europe.
Although the new lighthouse in Alexandria -- which stands 38 metres high and covers a ground surface of 50 square metres -- borrows its outlines from its Sevillian counterpart, it is by no means a mere imitation since Shaker's work adds many contemporary elements to the original construction, including some remarkable work in stained glass.Reviewed by Nagwa El-Ashri
