Abu Simbel temples

Abu Simbel lights up

By Nevine El-Aref

FOR THE FIRST time since the salvage of the magnificent Abu Simbel temples from certain inundation after the construction of the High Dam was completed in 1971, cruisers on Lake Nasser and tourists flying to the area will soon be able to enjoy a Sound and Light show at the famous monuments of Ramses II and the most beloved of his many wives, Nefertari.

The programme will feature the coronation of Ramses II, that most tireless of builders who literally carved the heart out of a mountain at Abu Simbel and had not just himself portrayed in four great seated statues at its entrance, but also his battles, particularly the famous victory of Kadesh which features in a huge relief on one wall of the temple.

The show will also include laser views of his other temples in Nubia including El-Sebou, Dakka and El-Maharaqa.

In order to give an added perspective to the temple of Nefertari, her recently restored tomb on the Theban necropolis will also be referred to in the programme.

The project is a collaborative effort between a Dutch company specialised in lighting and the Egyptian Sound and Light Company (ESLC). Mohamed Shafiq, chairman of the ESLC, said that the performance would be in seven languages, including Spanish and Japanese.

Its first performance is scheduled for October, the beginning of the winter tourist season and the best time of the year to visit Upper Egypt and Nubia.

On the same subject, the first Russian language Sound and Light show will be held at Luxor's Karnak Temple starting in August. They will be staged every Wednesday at 7.45pm.
