PRESIDENT Hosni Mubarak said in a speech to Egyptian university students in Alexandria yesterday that both state and civil society institutions, including political parties, trade unions and non-governmental organisations, were responsible for achieving development in Egypt."We will not hesistate in the coming stage to carry out the necessary changes and reforms that will enrich the process of popular participation in public life in a way that will not hurt the nation's supreme interests at this critical stage of our modern history," Mubarak told students representing 13 Egyptian universities.
Mubarak said he was aware of the hardship many youths have to face in order to get proper housing and promised that the government will work on schemes to encourage financial institutions to fund low-cost housing with reasonable interest rates.
Mubarak emphasised the role of youth in development and said that responsibility towards the future required working on increasing their talents and capabilities. "We have to look for talented and serious people in every field in order to give them the necessary care and resources needed to develop their talents."
Gold haul
EGYPT continued its breath-taking pace in the Pan-Arab Games in Jordan, collecting 166 medals, over 70 medals more than the country's nearest rival, second-place Tunisia. Egypt's haul -- 69 gold, 50 silver and 47 bronze medals -- far outweighed Tunisia's 95 medals, which included 30 gold.Egypt's swimming sensation Rania Elwani was responsible for 10 of the country's gold medals, a feat unprecedented in the 46-year-old history of the Games and which earned her the title of the best Arab athlete.
In Alexandria, President Hosni Mubarak welcomed members of the football team which struck gold at the World Military Games in Croatia. The team was received at Ras Al-Tin Palace where Mubarak congratulated the players on their success and awarded each of them the Sports Order of the First Degree.
