THE AL-AHRAM Organisation was the only newspaper publisher taking part in the exhibition, displaying the activities of its computer centre, AMAC, as well as its various publications. As he showed President Hosni Mubarak around Al-Ahram's booths, Ali Ghoneim, vice-chairman of the board of directors, said Al-Ahram was the first Egyptian press organisation to spread computer awareness via technology-specialised pages in its various publications.
AMAC, established in 1968, was the nation's first computer centre to provide training courses for government employees and those working in the field of human resources development. Developing software, computer systems and data bases, AMAC has thus far trained 58,000 people and created applications for 200 clients, including the Electricity Authority whose computer-based billing system the centre developed.
The largest computer service centre to date, AMAC also created educational programmes for the Education Ministry and recently completed putting fifth grade curricula on computer software. Moreover, it published a number of scientific encyclopedias on CD's for school children.
But AMAC's showpiece at the exhibition was Trojan Horse, the first Arabic software that will enable Internet users to read and download Arabic text. Trojan Horse was developed at the launch of the daily Al-Ahram website last year. So far, Al-Ahram has seven websites which include sister publications such as Al-Ahram Weekly, Al-Ahram Hebdo, El-Siyassa El-Dawlia and Al-Ahram El-Arabi that can be accessed free of charge.
