Chomsky's space

Sir- Al-Ahram Weekly should be highly commended for including in its commentary articles by Noam Chomsky. Almost purposefully overlooked in the US media, his analytical reviews provide a deeper understanding of the currents in current events.

Bashir's summary

Sir- Tahseen Bashir's "Notes towards an agenda" (Al-Ahram Weekly, 2-8 September) is a superb summary dealing with this important subject; thank you for the Weekly and for the excellent analysis of Arab problems and prospects discussed on its pages... as well as other topics useful to the specialist abroad.

Good old days

Sir-A dear friend in Cairo sent me the article, "The good old days", written by Rehab Saad (Al-Ahram Weekly, 27 May-2 June).

Congratulations, a very interesting article about the old Semiramis Hotel, which I read with great interest. And thank you for including my picture with the Begum Agha Khan.

I've spent 24 years of my life in that beautiful hotel, where I had my jewellery shop, meeting celebrities and famous people, especially movie stars.

When they demolished the old Semiramis, to make way for the new Semiramis, I was lucky to be able to relocate my new jewellery shop in the prestigious Egyptian Museum.

In 1988, I sort of semi-retired in Montreal, where I, my children and grandchildren live. I still keep my apartment in Heliopolis, however, and, with my wife, come every year in February and March to spend our vacation in our beautiful city.

Mayhem in Damanhour

Sir- Though I am currently living in Florida, USA, my love for my country, Egypt, and my home-town, Damanhour, is as strong as ever. However, during my last visit to Damanhour this summer I was shocked by the extent of the deterioration I witnessed in every aspect of the city's life. I'd been back on various visits before during the past 16 years, but never was the city in such bad shape.

The city is extremely dirty, hooliganism is rife on its streets; I saw street fights where people were badly injured or killed, while the police remained conspicuously absent. When I asked why the police were not being called, people would answer that they already knew what was happening and did not care.

I hope this letter will find its way to the officials concerned, and that they will do something to rectify this terrible situation, for I love Egypt and I love Damanhour.
