Win some, lose some

ZAMALEK and Misri advanced to the semi-finals of their respective African club football championships but Ahli was unceremoniously dumped.

Zamalek overcame a 2-1 deficit in the return leg against Kwara of Nigeria in the Confederation Cup, routing the African club in Cairo 4-0. Abdel-Latif El-Domany opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a close-range header. In the second half, the flood gates opened as newcomer Abdel-Halim Ali scored in the 49th and 61st minutes. Ayman Mashaley sealed the victory with a penalty kick four minutes before time.

In Port Said, Misri, too, turned a 1-0 first-leg loss into a 3-0 win against Congo's Dragons in the Cup Winners Cup. Al-Hassan Mohamed scored almost identical goals in the 14th and 21st minutes, while Mahmoud Abul-Dahab wrapped it up by netting a scorcher in the 41st minute.

Ahli spoilt the party, going down 2-1 to Ghana's Hearts of Oak in Ghana in the African Clubs League championship. The loss left Ahli in third place in the four-club group with three points from three games while Ragaa of Morocco lead with the maximum nine points from three games, all but locking up the top spot even though three games remain for each team. Ahli had equalised 1-1 in the second half but a defensive mix-up in Ahli's back line gave Hearts a late winner. Ahli's German manager Reiner Tsobil complained later that his players failed to follow through on his game plan and deserved to lose.
