ALONGSIDE Gamil Shafiq's Driftwood, the Gezira Arts Centre hosts exhibitions by Fathi Afifi, Hamdi Attia and Safwat El-Qadi. In a typically melancholy and intensely personal style, Afifi depicts the revolutionary experience of eastern Europe -- its dreams, tragedies and various visual manifestations. El-Qadi offers a striking array of glass mosaics, while Attia, through his complex three-dimensional compositions, which use modern technology, explores the hidden dimensions of matter.

Hamdi AttiaAt the Cairo Atelier, the veteran painter and calligrapher Saleh Bassala exhibits his latest works. Bassala stretches the possibilities of Arabic calligraphy to their utmost limits, offering fascinating physical depictions of the subjects of the Qur'anic verses he transcribes, while retaining a rare degree of calligraphic clarity.
