On 6 October 1973 Sadat launched the history-making October War, the ultimate result of which was to liberate Egyptian land from Israeli occupation. In a sad twist of fate, however, Sadat's day of triumph was to become the day of his assassination, at the hands of Islamist militants, 8 years later. In observance of both occasions, President Hosni Mubarak, after taking the constitutional oath of his fourth presidential term, headed to Nasr City to place a wreath of flowers at the Unknown Soldier Memorial. Mubarak placed a second wreath of flowers at the tomb of the late President Sadat. Mubarak also placed a third wreath at the tomb of the late President Gamal Abdel-Nasser.
