The three-day discussions, which took place on the war's silver jubilee, were divided into four sections: military, political, economic and social. The symposium also covered the 1967 defeat, the War of Attrition that followed, preparations for the October offensive and its consequences. "We were keen on making this great effort by our military experts, politicians, economists and sociologists available to foreign readers and institutes," a military source told Al-Ahram Weekly. "The armed forces organised the symposium last year with the aim of analysing in depth the various aspects of the war. Making this effort available to foreign readers will help put the Egyptian viewpoint across and expose any misrepresentation of what actually happened. This, in turn, will help preserve and maintain peace in the region," the source added. The first volume of the English-language edition deals with the military and political aspects of the war while the second covers the economic and social aspects.
