Sadat MARKING 6 OCTOBER: On Tuesday Egypt marked two momentous landmarks in its recent history, both connected with the late President Anwar El-Sadat. On 6 October 1973 Sadat launched the history-making October War, the ultimate result of which was to liberate Egyptian land from Israeli occupation. In a sad twist of fate, however, Sadat's day of triumph was to become the day of his assassination, at the hands of Islamist militants, 8 years later. --read on-- October OCTOBER LESSONS: To mark the anniversary of the October 1973 War, the armed forces have published a two-volume English-language edition of a strategic symposium held last year. The three-day discussions, which took place on the war's silver jubilee, were divided into four sections: military, political, economic and social.
