Here to stay

BRAZILIAN striker Ronaldo said he never considered quitting Inter Milan and will stay with the Italian club until they have won the league championship. He said he was moved by the reception he was given when he came off the substitutes' bench for Saturday's 2-1 win against Piacenza and wanted to win a title for the fans.

Vieira in trouble

ARSENAL'S French midfielder Patrick Vieira risks serious disciplinary action after allegations of spitting and a reported confrontation with a police officer following his sending off last week. A Football Association (FA) spokesman said they were waiting for the referee's version of the game at West Ham, which Arsenal lost 2-1, and a separate report from a police officer at the match.

Referee admits error

LIVERPOOL'S Steve Staunton has escaped suspension after a referee admitted he had erred in sending him off at the weekend. Referee Rob Harris sent the Irish defender off after 30 minutes when he collected a second yellow card for apparently encroaching on a free kick against Aston Villa in the premier league.

Making a statement

SERENA Williams and her sister Venus have announced plans to dominate the world after beating the top-ranked players at Munich's Grand Slam Cup. Ranked third and fourth, the American sisters wowed the crowds with their commitment and athleticism as they notched up wins over world No 1 Martina Hingis and second-ranked Lindsay Davenport.

Olymoic testimony

IOC PRESIDENT Juan Antonio Samaranch has said he had agreed to testify before a US Congress hearing into Atlanta's winning bid for the 1996 Olympics. "I have accepted an invitation by the US Congress," Samaranch told a news conference after an IOC executive board meeting. "I have sent a letter to Congressman Fred Upton informing him that I will go."

The Games were rocked last year by the biggest scandal in Olympic history when evidence surfaced suggesting bribes were offered to organising committees which select candidate host countries.

Schumacher out

DOUBLE world champion Michael Schumacher will miss the last two races of the Formula One season. Ferrari said in a statement that Schumacher, who broke his right leg at the British Grand Prix in July, had told them he did not feel he had recovered fully enough to race.

Richest tournament

BRITAIN'S Greg Rusedski won the world's richest tennis tournament with a confident victory over Tommy Haas of Germany in the $6.7 million Grand Slam Cup.

Taking advantage of his powerful serve and the inexperience of his opponent, Rusedski fired 29 aces past Haas to claim his first title of the year and the $1.3 million top prize with his 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 victory.

Montjeu wins another

DUAL Derby winner Montjeu proved a true champion last week, landing the last Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe of the century in gutsy fashion. The stylish three-year-old battled up the stamina-sapping straight at Longchamp, making up five lengths in the worst ground for 20 years to beat back the gallant El Condor Pasa by half a length.
