State of the press
IBRAHIM NAFIE, head of the Press Syndicate and board chairman of the Al-Ahram organisation, inaugurated on Tuesday, the new headquarters of the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ), reports Nadia Abou El-Magd.Nafie, who is chairman of the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ), is presiding over the three-day general secretariat meetings. Thirteen out of 15 members attended. High on the agenda were the state of the press in the Arab world and the harsh penalties for publication offences, including imprisonment. The FAJ is also discussing a unified Arab press code as well as amendments to its charter.
In his opening speech, Nafie welcomed the members to their new permanent headquarters in downtown Cairo. The old headquarters were closed some 20 years ago as a result of the inter-Arab rift that followed Egypt's signing of the Camp David Accords with Israel. Nafie succeeded in getting the FAJ back to Cairo in 1996.
After an hour-long closed session, Nafie told reporters that the secretariat approved the agenda "which includes very important issues that reflect the concerns and hopes of Arab journalists." Nafie added that one of the main goals of the FAJ is to prepare Arab journalists for the coming century.
