DURING the first meeting of the new cabinet on Sunday, Prime Minister Atef Ebeid appeared keen to stress that economic reform would continue along roughly the same path outlined by his predecessor, reports Shaden Shehab.
Strategic establishments, including the Suez Canal, the Petroleum Association and military industries, would remain within the public sector, said the new prime minister, who also promised that there would be greater stability within the money markets.
While emphasising the importance of offering more attractive investment opportunities, Ebeid insisted that the policies adopted by the cabinet should at the same time maximise on the creation of job opportunities, and ensure that levels of public service are improved.
Enhancing the transparency of the decision-making process would be prioritised by his government, said Ebeid, who also hoped that cabinet discussions would be sufficiently constructive to allow decisions to be taken unanimously. He also urged that ministers should avoid participating in extravagant festivities in an attempt to cut ministerial expenses.
Cabinet meetings will be held every other Tuesday.
