EGYPT'S top ranked gymnast Raouf Abdel-Kerim and Sherine Karam both qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Abdel-Kerim, 21, the only Egyptian to have won a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games, a feat he achieved in Italy in 1997, qualified in the individual competition in the World Gymnastics Championship held recently in China.
Though the Egyptian champ failed to win any medals, he came in first among African participants, automatically qualifying him as the sole continental candidate.
Karam qualified for the women's discipline after ending up in first place among her African compatriots at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship held last week in Japan.
Egypt's top female gymnast, Yasmine Youssef, a four gold medal winner at last month's All-Africa Games in Johannesburg, was injured in Japan and failed to qualify for the Olympics.
