FINLAND'S Mika Hakkinen claimed the Formula One title after his Ferrari rival Eddie Irvine won in Malaysia but was then disqualified.The Mclaren driver had finished third in a race dominated by the Ferrari duo of Irvine and former world champion Michael Schumacher, making a spectacular comeback from injury with a second-place finish.
Franchitti wins
SCOTLAND'S Dario Franchitti won the Gold Coast Indy Race at the Cart Championship.Franchitti, starting from pole, led for most of the way to win the 65-lap race around the 4.5-km street circuit in his Reynard Honda in a time of one hour, 58 minutes and 40.726 seconds.
Montgomerie close
COLIN Montgomerie led American defending champion Mark O'Meara by three holes halfway through their 36-hole world matchplay final, despite losing the last two holes of the morning.The 36-year-old world No 3, attempting to win the title for the first time in his eighth appearance, dominated the game until O'Meara's counter-attack at the finish.
McCoist breaks a leg
FORMER European Golden Boot winner Ally McCoist may have to end his career at the age of 37 after suffering a broken leg.McCoist, who made his name as a prolific goalscorer for Rangers, suffered a fracture to the tibia in his left leg playing against his old club in a 1-1 draw with his current team, Kilmarnock.
Perryman guides Shimizu
ENGLISH manager Steve Perryman celebrated a recent continental coaching honour by guiding Shimizu S-pulse through to the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup Winners' Cup.S-pulse beat Shanghai Shenhua 2-0 in the second leg of their second-round tie at Shimizu on Saturday to go through 2-0 on aggregate after drawing 0-0 in China two weeks ago.
Zimbabwe stumbles badly
ZIMBABWE'S brave fightback on the fourth day of the one-off Test against Australia stumbled in mid-afternoon when they lost three quick wickets to reach tea on 211 for five, still 17 runs away from making Australia bat again.Murray Goodwin continued to hold the innings together, however, with an unbeaten 79 from 224 deliveries in almost five hours.
Kiprop the fastest
KENYA'S Fred Kiprop has won the Amsterdam Marathon for the fourth time, finishing in two hours, six minutes and 46 seconds.Kiprop beat Ethiopian Tesfaye Jifar by just three seconds in a sprint finish. William Kiplagat of Kenya was third, clocking a time of 2:06.53.

CHILE'S top seed Marcelo Rios beat Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the final of the Singapore Open.Seles pulls out
TOP seed Monica Seles, ranked No 5 in the world, has pulled out of the Kremlin Cup with injury, tournament organisers said.The $1,050,000 annual tournament, which started in Moscow on Monday, was also hit by the withdrawals of Russian teenager Anna Kournikova and Amanda Coetzer of South Africa.

SCOTTY Bowman recorded another milestone coaching win in the National Hockey League, notching his 1,100th career victory at the expense of the winless Philadelphia Flyers.Sergei Fedorov picked up a pair of assists, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win.
Tunisia build up
GERMAN-based striker Mehdi bin Slimane scored after five minutes to give Tunisia a 1-0 win over the United Arab Emirates in a friendly match.The game marked the start of Tunisia's preparations for the 2000 African Nations Cup in Ghana and Nigeria. Next month they play top Italian club Inter Milan in Milan. Tunisia, drawn against Nigeria, Morocco and Congo in the Nations Cup 'group of death', have also planned friendlies against fellow-finalists Zambia and defending champions Egypt.
Zimbabwe shocks Uganda
ZIMBABWE upset Uganda 3-0 in Kampala over the weekend as the mini-league phase of the African qualifiers for the 2000 Olympics kicked off.Defending champions Nigeria defeated Angola 2-0 in Lagos and Morocco edged out Egypt 1-0 in Rabat.
