Victims families arrive in New York

DEVASTATED family members of the victims of flight 990 arrived on Tuesday morning [East Coast Time] to Rhode Island hoping to identify the bodies of their loved ones. It was a forlorn hope. Apart from a single corpse, no bodies had been recovered.

"One woman fainted once she saw the human remains. The whole scene was awful. It was unbearable for the New York based Egyptian diplomats and EgyptAir personnel who were there to help the family members, so you can imagine what it was like for the relatives. It was a very painful scene," said one Egyptian diplomat who had been on Rhode Island.

The 73 family members who arrived in the US face a difficult decision. Should the human remains that have been salvaged so far be brought back to Egypt for burial? It is a question they will be pondering for the next few days.

"Whatever we can do for family members we will be doing," said Ahmed Abul-Gheit, the head of Egypt mission to the UN. Accompanying the families during their stay in the US are Egypt's Consular General Soheir Zaki and Ambassador to Washington Nabil Fahmi.
